The manufacturing of molds or dies for injection-molded or die-cast components is a time-consuming task because it requires superior surface fi nish for sometimes very fi ne structures. Today many molds are directly milled in order to avoid the cost and time consuming eroding process. Increasingly small milling cutters with diameters as small as 0.12 mm are used. Mold and die making for milling is characterized not only by high demands upon dimensional accuracy. It also requires high feed rates, including for hardened materials, to reduce the machining times. Typical machining times for molds and dies range from 10 minutes to several days. Dimensional accuracy, however, must not be sacrifi ced to fast execution.
